Alexander Keirincx

A Forest Landscape with Saint Hubert

Oil on copper. 43 x 58 cm.

Alexander Keirincx depicts the miracle of Saint Hubert in a densely wooded landscape. The saint is said to have encountered a great stag with a crucifix between its antlers whilst out hunting in the forests of the Ardennes. He is venerated as the patron saint of hunters and marksmen. Stylistically, the present piece can be placed among the artist's early works due to the still strongly evident influence of his teacher Abraham Govaert and the general adherence to the Flemish landscape painting tradition of Jan Brueghel the Elder and Gillis van Coninxloo. After moving to Utrecht, Keirincx's palette became earthier and his style more realistic.
We would like to thank Dr. Ursula Härting for confirming the traditional ascription of this work to the Flemish-Dutch landscape painter Keirincx.
