Cologne ca. 1330

A wooden figure of a standing Saint, Cologne circa 1330.

Hardwood (possibly oak), carved in the round. With the original polychromy, the flesh tones overpainted. A finely carved figure of a crowned female saint standing in contrapposto with the right foot extended. The graceful curve of her body is accentuated by the posture of the head and arms and the drapery of her clothing. The overall design of the work and especially the facial features show direct stylistic parallels to the Cologne Madonnas and other Rhenish sculpture of the early 14th century. The work is inscribed "60-2-1" to the lower edge of the reverse.
The right hand, formerly attached via a dowel, now lost. The left hand was a later addition and was removed after 1998. The tips of the feet replaced. Minor wear. Height 24.5 cm.
