Probably Brandenburg ca. 1430

Seven presumably Brandenburg carved oak high-relief figures of the apostles, circa 1430.

The reverse of the figures flattened and hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Seven silhouetted figures from a 12 figure relief of the apostles. The pieces presumably originally belonged to the central panel of a carved altarpiece with two registers of six apostle figures surrounding a central figure - presumably a Madonna. The reliefs display elements of the supra-regional international Gothic style, but Albrecht Miller has suggested an origin in Brandenburg, where sculptures of a comparable style with similarly simplified depictions of the hair are located. In the original condition, this summary carving would presumably have been augmented by the polychromy.
The socles each with small holes from a former mounting. Some attributes, both hands of one figure and one hand of a further figure lost. Height of each 53 cm, depth 4-5 cm (one figure 7.5 cm).
