A probably Central Rhenish carved walnut pietà group, circa 1480/90.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With older, partially overpainted and partially original polychromy. A devotional image of the Virgin seated on a moulded bench, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds the diminutive body of Her son in her lap, supporting His head with Her right hand and holding His left arm aloft. The work is carved in an unusually fine and detailed manner, but retains a calm and self-contained appearance.
The tips of the Madonna's feet and the fingers of Christ's left hand lost. With minor wear. Height 44.5 cm.
