Bavaria or Tyrol 2nd half 15th C.

A carved wooden figure of St. George, Bavarian or Tyrolese, second half 15th century.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. With extensive remains of the consolidated original polychromy, which has only been overpainted to the hair, plinth and dragon. A large figure of the saint standing on a semispherical plinth. He is shown wearing armour and driving his lance into the mouth of the dragon cowering at his feet, whilst he holds its tail in his free hand. The measured curve of the contrapposto motif is mirrored by the calm expression of the saint's face, which is framed by his finely modelled curls. The detailed depiction of the armour also testifies to the quality and restraint of this carver's work.
The dragon's tail probably replaced, a small wedge-shaped addition to the front left edge of the plinth. The lance replaced. With minimal wear. Height 124 cm (without lance).

Provenance
