Goa 17th -18th century

A large 17th - 18th century Goan carved ivory depiction of Christ as the good shepherd.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. The statuette is formed from three loosely attached pieces. The figure of the good shepherd sits cross legged atop a tall column set into a three-sided socle formed as three angels. One lamb is shown sitting on His shoulder and He holds another in the crook of His left arm. The shepherd wears a fur garment and a belt about His waist from which a gourd flask hangs. The hollow ivory column is set into the socle via a wooden spike.
With fine vertical cracks and a small drilled hole to the top of the head. Height 34 cm.
