Goa 17th - 18th century

A 17th - 18th century small Goan carved ivory depiction of Christ as the good shepherd.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. The tall, figural socle formed from two firmly attached parts. The design of the small, loosely attached figure of the good shepherd is identical to that of the larger figure in the previous lot. The centre of the socle shows the fountain of the water of life surrounded by saints and lambs, and below this three rocky niches in which we see the penitent saints Jerome, Paul and Mary Magdalene. The lower edge of the socle is carved with symmetrically arranged vases and lambs.
With a few vertical hairline cracks. Some slight yellowing, otherwise in perfect condition. Height 26 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
