Charles Henri Manguin

Study for "La coiffure"
1904/1905

India ink and pencil on chamois coloured firm drawing paper 72.1 x 55.2 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'Manguin' in brownish ink lower left. - The sheet slightly irregularly cut, minimally browned towards the margins with very weak light-stain. Marginal defects professionally restored.

The present ink drawing is connected with one of the most important works from Manguin's Fauvist period, the large-format oil painting “La Coiffure”, of 1904/1905, formerly in the collection of Léo Stein in Paris. While the painting develops a tonally harmonised interior around the figures, the nudes here are surrounded by a vegetal scenery that occupies the open space and seems to take up the rounded and curvilinear forms in a decorative and contrasting style.

Certificate

With a photo-certificate by Claude Holstein-Manguin, the artist's granddaughter, Villeneuve near Avignon, dated 6 March 2015 (Archive no. 6 MO46515R133)
