Eugen Meyer-Berlart initially worked as a drawing teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich before studying painting under Hugo von Habermann at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. His oeuvre is manifold and amongst a series of oil paintings it also unites watercolours, etchings and woodcuts. Similar to Hodler, Meyer-Belart refers to art nouveau and symbolism in the present painting. These references become apparent in the style of his female figures as well as in the colouration. His paintings disclose a disposition towards mysticism and the desire to comprehend the complexity of the human soul.
