A stained ivory netsuke of a horse jumping through a spider's web strung on a coiled length of bamboo. 19th century. Old restoration.
Height 3.8 cm

According to Volker the netsuke illustrates a long poem (uta) about the samurais who stayed poor rather than ally themselves with a bad man and who therefore have to keep their horses in a cobwebbed stable.
