Born in Kashmir, the Neo-Tantric painter and poet joined the Progressive Artist Association in Srinagar, with his first solo show in the city in 1953. His early landscapes, influenced by cubism, led to abstract compositions often based on the figure and inspired by Tantric and Kashmiri Shaivism. He had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide including at the São Paolo Biennale in 1969 and 1972.
