The painter Bernhard von Guérard was born in Düsseldorf and travelled to Vienna with Prince Carl von Auersperg in 1793, where he remained for 20 years and became a highly successful portrait painter. He acquired patrons from the imperial household and from the princely Schwarzenburg family, as well as numerous other aristocratic families, actors and musicians of this city. According to the artist's inscription on the reverse of the piece, this portrait of the sisters Caroline and Ida was also painted in Vienna.
