With red artist's stamp to the reverse of the canvas: "Vinc. St. Lerche / Düsseldorf".
The Norwegian artist Vincent Lerche moved to Düsseldorf in 1856 where he studied at the Academy under artists such as Wilhelm Schadow. His genre paintings often show scenes from monastic life and are characterised by a detailed but atmospheric depiction of architecture.
