Christian Ernst Morgenstern is considered one of the most important German proponents of early Realism in painting. He already acquired this reputation whilst studying in Hamburg from 1826 - 1829 and together with Wasmann, Dahl and Menzel after moving to Munich in 1830. He was grandfather to the famous poet Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914), but his family was not in any way related to the Morgenstern family of painters in Frankfurt.
