A Turkish Military Encampment
Oil on canvas. 90 x 160 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Th. Rocholl 1919.
Theodor Rocholl was one of the most productive and successful military painters of the late 19th century. His often dramatic compositions were carried out in a sketchy, pastose style revealing Impressionist influences. Unlike numerous works by this artist which depict the dramatic action of war, this piece is unusual in that it shows a peaceful scene of Turkish soldiers at rest by a stream in an almost idyllic landscape.
