Several versions of the present composition exist, but so far none have been accepted as authentic works of Jan Weenix. The painting uses the motif of a still life with game in a landscape which Weenix developed during the early 1680s and used up until the end of his career. These works show a pile of felled game in the right foreground presented in front of a stone urn or a brickwork socle, whilst the left of the image opens out onto a landscape, usually a park. A signed work by Weenix with a highly similar composition, especially with respect to the park landscape in the background, is kept in the picture gallery of the Akademie der Schönen Künste in Vienna.
