A Suisse 18 ct gold and enamel snuff box with London marks

A Suisse 18 ct gold and enamel snuff box with London marks. With floral decor, finely painted to the lid and edges with harbour scenes and a trophy still life to the underside, in the manner of Jean Louis Richter. London assey mark of 1808, maker's mark Henry Crosswell I, 1796 - 1805 (1805 - 1816 his widow Mary-Ann continued his workshop). Damage to the enamel of the left edge, one stud lost. H 2.2 x 9 x 6 cm. Weight 244.8 g.
Possibly Geneva, ca. 1830/35. The box with London marks of 1808.

The style and fine quality of the painting is reminiscent of Genevan gold and enamel works of this period.

Literature

Cf.: Snowman, 18th century goldboxes, 1966, Plate 744-46. Here a formally and stylistically similar box merely stamped "London" to the innter edge which Snowman ascribes to Geneca, 1st quarter 19th C.
