According to tradition (cf. cat.: Sotheby´s, London, 14.4.1948), the present work was discovered in 1870 in the collection of the Counts of Canossa in Verona by no lesser than John Ruskin and attributed by him to Albrecht Dürer. It was purchased on Ruskin's recommendation by the English collector James Reddie Anderson and later sold again by Sotheby's in 1948 as "An important Durer Portrait".
