Frans Boels

The Fable of the Fox, the Dog and the Hen

Oil on panel. 10.6 x 12.4 cm.

Frans Boels was a pupil of Hans Bol, and possibly his step-son. Aside from a few very colourful signed and dated gouaches which can most fittingly be referred to as "world landscapes", very little of this painter's oeuvre has yet been identified. These landscapes seen from above are typical of the waning 16th century, and Klaus Ertz attributes this landscape with a fable to around this period. During the 17th century it was primarily the painter Jan van Kessel the Elder who concerned himself with animal fables.
