Richard Brakenburgh

Merry Company in an Interior

Oil on canvas (relined). 58 x 69 cm.

The present work is a characteristic example of Richard Brakenburgh's oeuvre. He was active in Haarlem and continued this city's genre painting tradition into the second half of the 17th century. Brackenburgh, who also painted portraits and italianate landscapes, often utilised motifs developed by artists such as Jan Steen and Adriaen van Ostade in his genre paintings, and was highly successful throughout his career. The present work depicts a busy tavern scene, the composition of which centres on a pair of women being propositioned by two men.

Certificate
