In 1904, Edward and Mary Brandegee purchased around 8,200 drawings from the collection of Giovanni Piancastelli in Rome. Parts of their collection later landed in American museums, others on the art market in the same country in 1944.
In her monograph on Giani, A. Ottani Cavina illustrates an engraving by this artist with the same composition (op. cit. vol. I, p. 19) made in 1785.
