Jacob Jacobs underwent a lengthy sojourn to Africa and the Near East in 1838, during which he also visited Egypt. This landscape illustrates the profound effect that this journey had on Jacob's oeuvre. He made numerous sketches throughout the trip which later served as an endless source of artistic inspiration upon his return to his hometown of Antwerp.
Jacobs was born in Antwerp in 1812, and aside from his often lengthy sojourns, he spent the entirety of his career in the city. He studied at the Royal Academy and first specialised in maritime works in the Dutch 17th and 18th century tradition until his journeys to Egypt and the Near East broadened his repertoire and gained him a reputation as one of the most sought-after Orientalists in Belgium.
