Franciszek (Franz) Streitt was born in Brody in the Ukraine and studied at Kraków art college from 1858 to 1868. In 1871 he transferred to the Academy in Vienna and was there taught by Eduard von Engerth. He moved to Munich in the same year and there joined a group of Polish artists together with Józef Brandt and Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski, as well as becoming a member of the Münchner Kunstverein. He mainly painted genre scenes depicting the lives of Galician peasants and Romany.
