Andrea Landini studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence with the history and portrait painter Antonio Ciseri as well as the figure and portrait painter Riccardo Pasquini. This painting is characteristic for the oeuvre of Andrea Landinis who was known for his humoresque representations of cardinals lvining in affluence. Landini depicts this scene with meticulously painted details.
The artist worked in Florence, Rome, and Paris. His last exhibition took place in 1911 in the Paris Salon, organised by the Société des Artistes Français.
