Venice circa 1700

A Venetian carved boxwood depiction of the ecstasy of Saint Teresa, circa 1700. Verzückung der Hl. Theresia von Avila

With possible remains of former partial polychromy.. This finely carved silhouetted high-relief shows the saint dressed in the habit of her order, reclining on a cloud bank being elevated towards the heavens by three angels. The piece displays close stylistic paralells to the works of Andrea Brustolon (1662 - 1732), for example his carvings of the "Sacrifice of Isaac" and "Jacob Wrestling with the Angel" kept in the Liebighaus in Frankfurt (Götz-Mohr, op. cit., no. 14-15).
The right arm of the upper angel replaced. Vertical hairline cracks, otherwise in perfect condition. Inset into a deep frame with an arched front panel. 36 x 24 x 4.5 cm.

Provenance
