North German circa 1620

A North German sandstone figure of a putto with symbols of vanitas.

The reverse flattened, partially gilt. The nude, seated putto is flanked to the sides by large symmetrically shaped but variously decorated panels. In his hand he holds the weakly burning torch of life, and he looks down pensively at the skull in his left hand. The piece was formerly the crowning element of a wall-mounted epithaph, the finial is, however, lost.
In perfect condition. 40 x 55 x 16 cm.

Provenance

Estate of Generalkonsul Bruno H. Schubert, Frankfurt/Main 2011. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
