Naples circa 1720

A carved hardwood figure of an angel as a crest holder, Naples circa 1720.

Carved in the round, with glass eyes. Ornate original polychromy with gilding and embossed decor.. An important example of an opulently painted late Baroque Neapolitan armorial figure, in exceptional condition. The life-like angel is shown with its right hand upon its hip and its left hand extended, where it would originally have supported a shield with a coat-of-arms resting upon the ground.
The wings lost. With minimal wear. Height 85 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
