Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse

A white Carrara marble portrait bust of Albrecht Dürer.

Carved in the round.. This idealised bust of Albrecht Dürer was made as part of a series of portraits of famous artists which Carrier-Belleuse carried out in various materials between 1860 and 1874. This portrait shows the legendary German artist not in the traditional, Christ-like manner but instead as an aged but vigorous character with the pathos of a true Renaissance man. Signed "A. CARRIER" to the reverse.
In perfect condition. Mounted on a two-piece marble socle. Height 41 cm (without socle).
