"The two worlds in which one could walk unhindered [...] were a possibility for understanding, to show that those on the other side aren't as bad as they tell us here, that they too have their everyday problems and worries and aren't all that interested in power politics. But the wall stopped all that. I felt trapped, my ideals of international understanding were dead. Berlin lost its magic for me."
