Oil on canvas 181 x 155 cm With artist's frame. Monogrammed and dated 'WK 41.' (ligated) lower right. Additionally monogrammed 'WK' (ligated) verso lower right under the stretcher. - In good condition with fresh colours. Two traces of light rubbing to the lower area, small losses of colour verso.

Walther Kniebe who studied sculpting at Düsseldorf Kunstgewerbeschule participated in the famous Sonderbundausstellung in Cologne with his sculptures in 1912 and in the exhibition "Rheinische Expressionisten" at the Galerie Flechtheim in Düsseldrorf in 1914. An exhibition in 1922 at Galerie Ernst Arnold in Dresden lead to his artistic breakthrough. Ostracized by the National Socialists, he renounced sculpting in 1940 and devoted himself to painterly works of anthroposophical character. A comprehensive exhibition of his paintings took place at the Städtisches Museum in Brunswick in 1955.
