Yang Jiechang was born in Foshan (Guangdong province) and studied calligraphy and traditional painting at the Art Academy in Guangdong, where he taught from 1982-1988. His work ranges from ink-wash painting, Chinese calligraphy, performance and installation, to photography and video. He started to reform the tradition of Chinese ink painting in a time when the Chinese avant-garde movement of the 1980s started to turn away from it. The use of ink in omnipresent in his work. Yang Jiechang currently lives and works in Paris with his family.
