Kalckreuth studied under Schirmer at the Düsseldorf academy and later worked in Berlin, Weimar and Munich. He began taking sojourns to the Alps in 1848, returning to his studio to compose landscapes with detailed studies of nature. The present work is one such piece, and presumably shows a landscape in South Tyrol.
