Wilhelm Trübner

The Death of the Count of Mansfeld

Oil on canvas (relined). 42 x 49 cm.
Monogrammed lower left: W.T..

The present, loosely painted sketch presumably originates from the artist's estate, which was auctioned by Lepke in Berlin in 1918. Count Ernst II of Mansfeld (1580 - 1626) was a distinguished soldier and military leader during the 30 years' war - fighting against the Habsburg Emperor and his allies. According to legend, Mansfeld supposedly awaited death in full armour, supported by two attendants.

Provenance

Probably auctioned by Rudolph Lepke, Berlin, (estate of Wilhelm Trübner I. Category: Eigene Gemälde. Arbeiten seiner Gattin Alice. Werke aus dem Freundeskreise), 4.6.1918, lot 87.
