A gothic Limoges enamel medallion with an adoration scene

In a vermeil frame. Minor, localised losses to the enamel (paillons); scratches; old repairs; wear to the gilding; cracks to the reverse. Frame H 9.8, D 8.6 cm.
Late 14th / early 15th C.

This small but important objet de vertu displays strong stylistic parallels to two plaques with passion scenes kept in the Green Vault in Dresden. These pieces are attributed to the circle of the Master of the Orléans Triptych and dated to around 1500.
The present work is of rounded form, which calls for a different approach to composition. The circular arrangement of figures solves this problem masterfully, filling the entire available surface of the piece. The finely shaded three-dimensional modelling of the faces and hands draws the viewer's gaze towards the expressions and gestures of the figures and accentuates their interaction with one another.
The artist has used his technical skills to further emphasise the precious nature of the object by adding a band of beaded moulding to the upper border of the piece. This so-called “paillons” is formed by encasing metal plaques beneath translucent enamel. This decorative band incorporates the haloes of the Virgin and the crowns of the kneeling kings and reaches down to the cloak hem of the king on the right.
The medallion is set into a vermeil frame of twisted cords and acanthus vine, which provides such a perfect surround for the motif and accentuates its religious and material value so well that it is presumed to be a contemporary gothic silversmith's work and thus possibly the original frame.
