A "kurkölnisch" Bonn silver gilt flag pole tip

Engraved with the Cologne electoral arms, the inscription "SI EXURGAT ADVERSVM ME PRAELIUM IN HOC EGO SPERABO" and the later later reference "Psalm 26". H 24.5 cm, weight 239 g.
Marks of Christian Udesheim, late 17th C.

This flag pole topper belonged to the court silver of Joseph-Clemens (1671 - 1723), Elector and prince-bishop of Cologne, who came into office in 1688. The iconographic scheme of this profane work references both the prince bishop's worldly and religious orders. The maker's mark of this piece is not illustrated by Clasen and Scheffler, but the monogram allows it to be relatively securely attributed to Christian Udesheim, who was a member of a well-known goldsmith dynasty from Bonn (cf. also the alternative spellings Udisheim and Üdesheim, Scheffler Rheinland no. 8, 11, 12).
