Oil on canvas (relined). 24.5 x 33 cm.

This work can be brought into connection with an engraving by this artist from the 1540s which depicts the same biblical motif in a slightly differing composition (cf. F. L. Richardson: Andrea Schiavone, Oxford 1980, no. 88, illus. 34). Both the engraving and the painted version display typical characteristics of Schiavone's style, such as the elongated proportions of the figures, pronounced contrapposto, vivid Venetian colouring and loosely painted landscape backdrop.
