The rigid and archaic composition of this work references to the Spanish bodegón tradition. This type of still life generally depicts everyday kitchen items or victuals arranged on a plain stone slab. Although these somewhat austere Spanish compositions contrast greatly with their sensual, opulent and luxurious northern European counterparts, both incorporate vanitas symbols.
