Emilio Savonanzi was born into a Bolognese aristocratic family and was taught to paint in his hometown by Giovanni Battista Cremonini, Denys Calvaert and Ludovico Carracci. Like many other artists from Bologna, he later moved to Rome. There he met his countryman Guido Reni and received numerous commissions for important altarpieces, such as that of the church of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura. His works display the influence of Roman baroque artists such as Guercino, and the present canvas clearly shows the importance of Caravaggio and the caravaggesques for Savonanzi's style.
