Pieter van Avont
Gerard de la Vallée

Wooded Landscape with the Virgin, Christ Child and Saint John

Oil on copper. 55.5 x 69 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre: Gerard de la Vallée 1632 / J. Brueghel.

Cooperative works between two artists were common in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Pieter von Avont was specialised in figure painting, and his Antwerp colleagues, including Jan Brueghel the Younger, David Vinckeboons, Lucas van Uden and Jan Wildens, often recruited him to paint the figures in their landscape compositions.
The landscape painter Gerard de la Vallée (Lavallée) is less well known. He was probably born in France before 1605 and was accepted as a master by the Antwerp painter's guild in 1626/27. His landscapes are primarily influenced by those of Abraham Govaert, but also of Jan Brueghel. As a signed work, the present panel represents an interesting addition to his little-studied oeuvre.
