Probably Central Rhine Region 2nd half 15th century

A probably Central Rhenish wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, second half 15th century.

Carved in the round and with older polychromy.. The crowned Virgin is shown standing in contrapposto on the crescent moon, holding a (replaced) scepter in Her right hand and the blessing Christ Child over Her hip with Her left hand. The work's fine quality is shown especially in the Virgin's long hair falling in finely carved waves down Her back, as well as the elaborate drapery of the red cloak, which stands in marked contrast to the smooth pleats of Her dress.
Partial losses to the crowns, the back of the plinth replaced. With wear and minor losses to the polychromy. Height 97 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
