A Bavarian wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1500

Carved in the round. With extensive remains of a presumably Baroque and subsequently overpainted polychromy. A figure of the Virgin standing in pronounced contrapposto, holding the nude Christ Child over Her hip. The Virgin's robe and gown reach over the edges of the octagonal plinth, and a crescent moon is lain at her feet. The figure is finely worked throughout, even the long, wavy curls and vertical folds of the cloak to the reverse of the piece.
Wear with minimal losses. Height 26.5 cm.
