A Mechelen wooden Anna Selbdritt group, circa 1500

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Remains of the original polychromy. A finely carved, standing depiction of the matronly Saint Anne holding her daughter Mary in her right arm. Mary holds the nude Christ Child, who turns to face the beholder. Saint Anne presumably held an open book in her lost left hand. The back of the piece bears the city mark of Mechelen.
The child's right arm and the plinth (due to insect damage) lost. Loosely mounted on a modern metal plinth. Height 35.5 cm.
