A probably Lower Rhenish relief of doubting Thomas, circa 1500

Presumably carved oak, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. High, silhouetted relief on a spreading base. The work shows Christ in the centre surrounded by His apostles and turning towards Thomas, who is shown kneeling upon the ground, placing his hand in the saviour's wound. The facial features, hair and robes are differentiated and finely carved. The work presumably originally formed part of an altarpiece.
The plinth with a few vertical cracks. 53 x 51 x 12 cm.
