A Mechelen wooden figure of Saint John the Baptist, circa 1520

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With original polychromy, the darker areas presumably partially overpainted. A figure of the standing and blessing saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. He holds one attribute, the chalice and serpent, in his left hand and the eagle is seen at his feet. The figure has been carved in fine detail, down to the embossed hems of the golden cloak draped around the saint's body. The back of the figure bears the mark of the city of Mechelen.
