South German 18th century

An 18th century South German carved wooden dish with the head of John the Baptist

With partially overpainted polychromy. This dish with a depiction of the severed head of Saint John the Baptist follows the expressive style of late medieval examples. The lower edge of the dish bears an armorial cartouche in a scrollwork frame.
With minimal wear. Diameter 45 cm, depth 14 cm.
