Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein

Portrait of the Painter Joseph Dorffmeister

Oil on copper. 42.5 x 34.5 cm.

Inscribed and monogrammed to the reverse: Al suo vero Amico Giuseppe Dorffmeister / Fece Anno 1801 JHT.
Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein was born into a large family of artists from Hesse. His work “Goethe in Campagna” is probably the most famous image of German Neoclassicism. The present work from 1801 presumably portrays the Austrian painter Joseph Dorffmeister (1764-1806), another artist friend (“vero Amico”) of Tischbein, who he may have met in Italy, as both of them resided there for several years.
