Ludwig Emil Grimm

Potrait of Hedwig von Münchhausen, later von Scholley

Watercolour over pencil. 16.1 x 12.5 cm.

The present work in watercolours is a study for “The Moor's Baptism”, painted by Ludwig Emil Grimm in 1841 (MHK Neue Galerie Kassel). Hedwig von Münchhausen, who married the Austrian field marshal lieutenant Otto von Scholley in 1845, stood as model for the female protagonist in this work. Her sister Agnes von Münchhausen married Grimm's brother-in-law Ludwig Hasenpflug after the death of his first wife in 1837. A further portrait sketch of Hedwig by the same artist was sold by Bassenge in Berlin on 1.6.2012.
