Bretonische Küstenlandschaft mit Dorf
1932

Oil on canvas 73.5 x 117 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Mané-Katz 32' in reddish brown lower center. - The margins partially rubbed due to framing.

The Expressionist painter and sculptor Emmanuel Mané-Katz is primarily known for his depictions of Jewish everyday life, but also for his numerous landscapes and still lifes. His strong connection to the Jewish faith was linked to his father's work in a synagogue. After his initial years of training at the academy in Kiev, Mané-Katz moved to Paris in 1913, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and first met Soutine and later Chagall. Like many other Russian artists, he felt an almost magical attraction to the cosmopolitain French capital. Here he not only encountered Fauvism, but also the work of Rembrandt, Gauguin and Cézanne. Mané-Katz returned to Russia temporarily upon the outbreak of war in 1914, but he later returned to Paris and attained French citizenship in 1927. He is among the members of the École de Paris. The present work depicts a Breton village on a hill - a relatively characteristic motif for Mané-Katz - painted in his typical informal style and pastose brushwork.
