Emil Hünten

Battle Scene with Prussian Cavalry

Oil on canvas. 77.5 x 104.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Emil Hünten. 1867.

Emil Hünten learnt to paint in Paris and Antwerp, settling in Düsseldorf in 1851. He initially painted historic battle scenes, but later began to depict contemporary military motifs and participated in the German-Danish war as a member of the "Landwehr" in 1864. The motif of the present work could originate from this time. Emil Hünten was among the most important German battle and military painters of the 19th century, and his direct experiences of war lent his works a particular realism and attention to detail.
