With a hand-written label (possibly by the artist) to the back of the canvas with an exact description of the location (parts of this label have broken off but are included with the lot). According to the description, the work shows a narrow, rocky pass at the base of the Tourmalet mountain near the town of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Kalckreuth took a sojourn to the Pyrenees three years prior to painting this work in 1857, and there he made numerous sketches and drawings which he later transformed into classic landscape compositions in his studio.
